Utility room decor ideas

Utility room decor

It’s such a shame when you see a neglected utility room go un-noticed. We often think of these rooms as dull, unsophisticated spaces, just a place to clean and hang up our dry clothes. But what if we could turn these un-glorified rooms into stylish displays of elegance. Utility rooms don’t solely have to act as a lifeless practical space, why not inject a touch of your charm into your own utility cove. I’ve got some handy tips for you that will bring your utility space to the forefront, leaving you well on your way to designing the laundry room of your dreams.

For lots of utility ideas, visit the laundry and utility section at Robert Dyas

We all know that the utility room is the go-to room for all things laundry related, but who says it should only serve one purpose. If you’re especially short on space, you could use your utility room as a multi-functional space. As well using your space for a laundry area, other creative options include cupboard/ shelving storage for displaying an array of functional stylish accessories. Why not get ultra creative, by breaking up your utility space into various functional sections. For example, you could use one area as a larder space, and another area for a coat hanging section, etc.

A beneficial way to maximise space within your utility room is to invest in a ceiling or wall mounted airer. These options make great attributes to any utility space because they are lightweight, visually pleasing and they free up floor space considerably. What makes these trendy new airers so popular now, is mainly down to their flexibility and the fact that they’re extendable to a large degree. A much searched airer on the market right now, is the Modern Extendable Ceiling Airer on Amazon. I particularly like this product, because it’s quirky and sturdy. I have a lot more storage space and ground space now, plus it fits nicely with the  current layout of my room.

Utility rooms can certainly be a great asset, giving you optimal space for all of your appliances. Often an extension to the kitchen, your utility room can also house all of your kitchen appliances such as your washing machine, dryer, laundry baskets and sink. Try to take inspiration from your kitchen and create a secondary kitchen via your utility space. Utilise your space with storage for pots, pans and kitchen accessories. Use your imagination and add a lick of paint, put in some new tiles and finish with fancy lighting. Utility rooms deserve love and nurturing just like kitchens do, so think beyond functionality and aim to design a luxurious hub that you can escape too.

If you’re struggling with closet space, a great solution is to reorganise all of your hallway storage into your utility space. By combining the two, you’ll be allowing handy extra coat and shoe storage. Bench seating for shoe storage and shaker style racks to hang up bags and coats are excellent ways to store your boot room belongings. These types of storage solutions will have a real positive affect on your functional transitional space. Looking at things creatively, your boot storage will also showcase your lifestyle and interests, adding a extra little taste of flamboyance and charm.

Small decorative accessories can be underestimated, but in fact they make the biggest impact to any room. Take a bland utility room for instance – a few little accessories can add instant atmosphere and spark. Not only that, selecting which accessories go into your space is the best part, because you get to be creative with mixing and matching styles, textures and colours. My utility room features a series of storage tins, custom made baskets, vases, plants, storage bins and ornaments. These accessories represent my personality, and the same will apply to you when you add your own accessories. Bring out your creative side, and have lots of fun in the process!
